Researchers have developed a natural pesticide alternative that involves genetically modifying plants to repel pests without the need for artificial pesticides. The experiment came from Valencia Polytechnic University and the Spanish National Research Council, and it involved modifying a 'Nicotiana Benthamiana' plant to repel pests through the use of insect sex pheromones.
The plants will naturally release these pheromones that are a deterrent to pests, removing the need for harmful pesticides. The pheromones would repel insects and also potentially cause a reduced rate of reproduction in the same species as the pheromone uses. This means these plants would not only remove the need for pesticides but would reduce the population of pests in general.
These genetically modified plants are still in their testing phase, as the macro effects have yet to be determined.
