With the COVID-19 pandemic forcing offices to quickly shutter to curb the spread and keep their employees safe, many had to create suitable work environments from their homes for the first time–which is why Shopify employees were given the necessary funds to make themselves comfortable.
When announcing that its employees would be working from home starting March 16th, the ecommerce company gave each person a $1,000 stipend so that they could purchase the furniture, supplies, and whatever else they would need to be as productive at home as they were within their office space. After purchasing all that was needed for their home set-up, Shopify employees were able to file the one-time remote stipend as a company expense.
