'Room On a Roof' Sits Atop De Bijenkorf in Amsterdam

'Room on a Roof' is a quaint artist studio that is designed by Dutch firm i29 and is located on top of the 19th century-era De Bijenkorf department store that will host the brand's artist-in-residence program. This novel studio comprises just a single room and will be the home of a series of artists, designers, architects and musicians throughout the program.
'Room on a Roof,' a joint project between De Bijenkorf and the Rijksmuseum, is expected to run for over two years, with Dutch artist Maarten Baas slated to be the first artist-in-residence.
The design of Room on a Roof is said to have been inspired by Alice and Wonderland. For that reason, the space has a fairytale-like look and feel. One half of the room is fitted with a telescope that will allow the resident artist to gaze out at Dam Square and the surrounding area. The other side of the room has a stacked wooden structure with work space and a bed.
