British designer Tom Dixon presents a set of reimagined everyday sofas in the form of the Plump sofa and the Fat sofa. It may be unconventional to name furniture as such but it is crafted as a response to the varying needs of modern living. The furniture was unveiled during this year's London Design Festival.
Dixon shares, “We have witnessed an almost invisible revolution taking place in living rooms, lobbies, and lounges. Where previous generations gathered around a single focal point – be it the fireplace, television, or radio – we now find ourselves in increasingly deconstructed communal situations. Social media, wireless technology, and even the pandemic have transformed our spaces, where couches and sofas have taken on a central, omnidirectional role as platforms for slouching, working, shopping, and entertainment.”
As a response to these changes, Dixon imagines the sofa as a more traditional space by bringing the design back to the forefront of living spaces in order to enhance the ever-changing behaviors. The Plump is inspired by the Chesterfield design and boasts a modular function. The Fat is entirely modular for a full adaptability to meet the standards of all spaces.
