Google's Project Starline is a one-of-a-kind teleconferencing system that uses AI recognition technology to project lifelike holograms. The company unveiled its new technology at its I/O 2021 event. As video conferences become the norm in the workforce, this new way of virtual communication revolutionizes the video-chat industry.
Google replaces cameras and screens for what's called a 'magic window', wherein a hologram of the person on the other line is projected. Complex 3D scanning, AI recognition, and imaging tools are used to make the teleconference look and feel lifelike.
Using a specialized slew of depth sensors, the Project Starline is able to capture accurate movements. A light field display is then used to capture 3D video. The technology is still underdeveloped and is not yet cleared for sale by the FCC.
