Dix Park Conservancy, in collaboration with Duke Energy and artist Thomas Sayre, is set to transform two ordinary power poles in Dix Park into 73-foot sunflowers. This creative infrastructure project aims to enhance the visual appeal of the park and is scheduled to commence in Fall 2024, with the sunflowers becoming part of the park's Gipson Play Plaza entrance. Each sunflower tower will feature a steel ring representing the flower head, with power lines running through, and 48 steel petals reflecting electromagnetic wave patterns. Private donations will cover the estimated $2.5 million cost of the sunflower power poles, emphasizing community engagement and creative collaboration.
