Arsenit Designs the Piil Home Resting in an Estonian Forest
Amy Duong — October 19, 2023 — Art & Design
Architecture studio Arsenit designs the Piil, which is a modular wood and steel-constructed holiday home resting above the ground along the edge of a forest. It is located in Estonia and is essentially a cantilevered treehouse that is supported with steel and metal. It is made to balance on one leg right above a wooden terrace for a unique look and structure. The Piil features a larger cantilever that lifts up the living spaces above ground and shelters an outdoor space.
Founder of Arsenit Arsemi Timofejev tells Dezeen, "The architectural brief was for elevated accommodation — so at the start of the project four design options were explored, with only one involving a cantilever and the 'one-leg' approach, a sort of wild-card 'dream big' idea. Further studies suggested this approach was not only feasible, but also had two key advantages: it reduced ground-level presence to a minimum, and allowed Piil to 'grow' taller by extending the 'leg' up by several levels — to elevate the accommodation further into the tree branches!"
