These incredible 3-D paper portrait heads are created by Rotterdam papercraft artist Bert Simons. He is known for this extraordinary photo replica technique using computer programs to flatten the subject into printable pieces of paper which he then glues together.
He has also admitted that he cloned himself in order to get through a mid life crisis, realizing that he would vanish and disappear one day. Well, at least a great creative idea came out of the crisis.
Simons' range of paper artwork features many of his friends and politicians. Latest news is that he finished a paper portrait of Mr. Ivo Opstelten, former Mayor of Rotterdam (1999-2008) which is the first picture in the gallery above.
I think Simons' work is interesting, although there is something slightly eerie about hanging a human portrait on the wall in the style of old hunting trophies. Perhaps that’s just me being old fashioned?
