The 'Nosewise Handheld Olfactometer' is a device that adds a sense of smell to VR and mixed-reality applications. The device, developed by researchers from Stockholm University and Malmö University, is a 3D-printed olfactometer that attaches to an HTC Vive controller and releases different scents according to the game scenario.
The Nosewise Handheld Olfactometer uses four scent reservoirs that contain different scented liquids, such as fruity, floral, woody, and spicy. A Raspberry Pi Zero W and an Adafruit 815 servo controller control the opening and closing of the valves on the reservoirs, allowing the device to mix different scents in different ratios. A fan then blows the combined scents to the user’s nose through a tube. The device can be activated manually or automatically, depending on the game settings. The researchers have created a wine-tasting game to demonstrate the device’s capabilities, such as in the medical or therapeutic fields.
