Valentino recently debuted its Resort 2016 collection, which features a series of dresses inspire by the work of the Métis artist Christi Belcourt. Belcourt is a prominent Canadian artist and her works are on display as part of a permanent collection in the National Gallery of Canada. Belcourt's works are largely inspired by the beadwork of Métis and First Nations women in Canada.
Valentino recently approached Belcourt about using one of her paintings in particular called 'Water Song.' Belcourt allowed Valentino to use her painting to create a series of dresses inspired by the beautiful floral designs. There are nine dresses in total and each draws on Belcourt's work as a Métis artist.
Belcourt explains that she hopes her experience will encourage other fashion designers to collaborate with aboriginal and Métis artists. She believes that through these kinds of partnerships, fashion designers can help to better represent indigenous artwork.
