SproutsIO is the name of a smart microgarden system that makes it possible for anyone to become a grower of their own fresh produce from the comfort of their own home year-round without any soil.
The SproutsIO system takes the form of an app-connected plug-and-play hybrid hydroculture system that boasts: "In three short weeks you can grow up to 18 servings of leafy greens such as arugula or lacinato kale" and "For a family of four, it's possible to grow all of the monthly USDA recommended intake of leafy greens, such as kale, spinach or arugula, in two SproutsIO devices with two sIO refills."
SproutsIO has been in the works since Jennifer Broutin Farah begun carrying out research at the MIT Media Lab in 2011. Since then, the project has taken on a sophisticated, streamlined form and is now the subject of a crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter.
