Flat-Rate Single-Room Heat Pumps

Merino Energy Launches the Merino Mono for Home Electrification

San Francisco startup Merino Energy launched the Merino Mono, a through-the-wall single-room heat pump designed to simplify home electrification, featuring an all-in-one packaged design that embeds the outdoor components inside the unit. The company said the Mono is intended for quick installs in buildings with limited exterior space and will be offered at a flat rate that includes professional installation.

The Mono installs by drilling two 6-inch vents between studs and presenting a slim indoor air handler, avoiding major structural work; it plugs into a standard 120-volt outlet, pulls up to 900 watts and serves roughly 350 sq ft. Merino positioned the product for mild to moderate climates and said certified contractors can complete installs in under an hour, with early deployments in California multifamily retrofits.

For consumers, the Mono promises lower upfront cost and faster upgrades than many ductless projects, reducing barriers for electrification in older or constrained urban homes. Its room-focused, plug-in format aligns with growing demand for modular, scalable heat-pump alternatives that accelerate decarbonization without extensive renovation.

Flat-rate Installation Pricing
A predictable all-in-one price model that bundles device and professional installation creates new purchasing pathways for cost-sensitive retrofits in urban housing.
Packaged Through-wall Heat Pumps
Compact units that integrate outdoor components into a single through-wall package enable electrification in buildings with limited exterior space and constrained facades.
Plug-in Single-room Electrification
Low-power, plug-in heat pumps designed for single rooms allow incremental decarbonization of homes without extensive ductwork or electrical upgrades.

Sectors Adopting This

Multifamily Housing
Older apartment buildings could adopt room-level heat pumps to meet decarbonization targets while avoiding disruptive tenant-side renovations.
HVAC Contracting
Installers can scale service offerings around rapid, low-complexity installs that increase throughput and lower labor costs per retrofit.
Energy Utilities and Retailers
Energy providers may integrate flat-rate, plug-in heat pumps into demand-side programs to accelerate electrification and shift heating load profiles.
