Maison Martin Margiela took the spectators at his Fall/Winter 2013 Haute Couture runway on a journey of luxurious juxtaposition. The first aspect of his show that automatically drew your eyes in were the face coverings. Elaborate, extensively jeweled masks completely covered the model’s faces to the point that there was not one face shown during that entire show. Some of the coverings were made with materials and jewels and there were achromatic palettes and stunning rich tones used.
The most interesting facet of the entire show was the juxtaposition between the haute couture masks and dresses, and the boyfriend jeans. Margiela had over-sized blue jeans paired up with the most interesting, lavish tops and throws. This was truly a combination between overt luxury and regular everyday wear. It is obvious what Margiela wanted to showcase in his collection, and if it wasn’t being used to star in his show, he was covering it up. This collection shows that it is possible to mix high end with low end pieces, and that you can still end up with something magical.
