Lyft and Redwood Materials Aim to Repurpose Modern E-Bike Batteries
References: lyft & techcrunch
Lyft and Redwood Materials are uniting to ensure that batteries from electric bicycles and scooters are appropriately disposed of after use and do not end up in landfills. Lyft has recently been looking into a new and more efficient way to dispose of its vehicles, and its bike share program utilizes bicycles with a five-year lifespan. After five years, the batteries for these vehicles tend to end up in landfills, contributing to global warming and other climate issues.
By partnering with Redwood, Lyft can recover these dead or broken batteries and relocate them to Redwood’s facility in Nevada. Redwood will then decide how much of the battery can be repurposed and begin a chemical recycling process that removes nickel, cobalt, and copper from the units, allowing them to be used to make new batteries.
