Peter Mabeo designs the Lesire collection which is a range of hardwood furniture inspired by textiles as a unique juxtaposing concept. Mabeo, who is also the founder of Mabeo Studio has celebrated the intricate lace crochet processes that were prominent during the 1900s by South African women. The word 'Lesire' means 'wedding veil' in Tswana and nods to a textile known for its scallop-edged accent.
The designer explains, “We find that looking for design directions that are universally applicable in a world that is separated from us, is easier when we reach for what is around us with care. Our craftwork finds a place when we start from what is familiar and what we appreciate, translating either literally or conceptually, with a sense of freedom that is accommodating to what we have learnt and also to what is innate.”
