Ukrainian design studio MAKHNO Studio is rooted in its ability to create modern Ukrainian architecture, ceramics, and interior design with its latest highlight being the century-old Kyoto House. It was commissioned to update a part of the home to retain its ancient Japanese themes whilst also carefully tasked to add “a drop of Ukrainian color to the Japanese context.”
A lot of the home has a traditional heritage design which can be seen through the textural clay walls, original tatami mats, floor plan with low furnishings, shoji screens, and more. The part of the home that is being updated in used to stage traditional tea ceremonies and as a guest room. The studio went about the design by finding a gentle path of restoration to maintain the history.
