These Kwanghor Lee 'New Armor' Chairs are Ancient and Modern
Davina Sinnatamby — March 24, 2014 — Art & Design
The Kwanghor Lee 'New Armor' collection takes inspiration from ancient times. The Korean designer's iron oxide chairs are a tribute to his ancestral roots. He was inspired by the Joseon dynasty's wartime attire.
The collection includes versions of a chair and stool that combine glossy, and matte. More than just furniture, these chairs are works of art that combine geometric, angular, arched and abstract lines. The pieces are mainly bronze. This metal was seen in the designer's copper 'skin' series. True to his ancient inspiration, bronze was chosen as it was the very first alloy invented by humans. His pieces resemble relics from the past that have been restored.
The design world may be constantly evolving, but sometimes it's worth investigating the past to bring back some inspired works, and present them in modern times.
