An upcoming renovation to the Konica Minolta Planetarium in Tokyo will help to bring more wonders from the outside world indoors. The new space is set to open at the end of this year with a mock grass lawn and cloud-inspired seats to make visitors feel as though they are really outdoors.
Since space on the "lawn" and "clouds" are limited, the planetarium also will have many rows of regular seating. In addition to furniture, the soft lighting inside the theater is designed to look and feel like it comes from candles.
Although the 2020 Tokyo Olympics are years away, local governments in Japan are eagerly supporting projects like this one for the purposes of revitalizing art, science and culture in areas that will become major tourist destinations in the years to come.
