Chinese architects Shengdi Fu and Quanquan Liu from Atelier Gegeben tapped the help of artist Xindi Tong to create the Island Table. It was created for their client Mr. Junchen Lu, who is an avid art collector. In addition to this passion, he is also a private breeder of Rhacodactylus leachianus, a species of gecko.
He wanted to create something to express this passion whilst also bringing awareness to the possible extinction of the animal. As a result, he turned to the studio to create the Island Table. It is a sculptural furniture with glazed ceramic paired with black walnut wood. The table top has a green surface with spatial lines that are meant to represent topography maps. The base made from raw logs is cut with a chainsaw and the raw marks remain. Rounding it out are two small chairs made by hand.
