'I'm Poppy' is Going Mainstream with a Premier at Sundance
Justin Lam — January 23, 2018 — Pop Culture
The trailer for 'I'm Poppy' was recently released and the YouTube Red series seems poised to capture the fringe style of the YouTube personality. For those that do not know Poppy, the series may be a strong jumping off point. Poppy is a viral YouTube sensation who gained notoriety for her strange vlogs that had the character trying to become an android. The YouTube Red series does not change this origin story, but instead focuses on Poppy's rise to fame. The series does of course throw in plenty of strange happenings -- as to fit the idea of Poppy -- with the inclusion of a sentient mannequin and a satanic cult. The first episode of I'm Poppy will be debuting at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival.
While Poppy may just be a performance piece played by singer Moriah Pereira, it has transcended so far past traditional performance art. The character seems to be a surreal satire of pop culture, Internet media and online fame, and with this new series it seems as though Poppy has hit the mainstream. The surreal nature of the entire act is so against traditional media and yet Poppy has become an internet icon, and is celebrated in a space that transcends borders and cultures. Poppy's success truly speaks to the way a new generation consumes media and perhaps shows how self aware this internet generation is.
