The Hermeus Quarterhorse Hypersonic Aircraft Could Reach Mach 5.5
Michael Hemsworth — August 21, 2021 — Tech
The Hermeus Quarterhorse hypersonic aircraft is designed as the next iteration in air travel to help make conventionally long flights far faster for passengers to appreciate. The aircraft is powered by a turbine-based combined cycle (TBCC) engine that makes use of the GE J85 turbojet engine when launching and landing. The aircraft would be capable of reaching a top speed of Mach 5.5, which equals to 4,219mph.
The Hermeus Quarterhorse hypersonic aircraft has already been funded thanks to a partnership with the U.S. Air Force and will see testing starting in 2023. A cargo-only version would then be next in line for 2025 before finally resulting in a larger commercial passenger version in 2029. This would see travelers able to go from New York to London in under an hour.
