The HempWood Floor Panels are a Sustainable Alternative to Hardwood
Michael Hemsworth — March 25, 2020 — Eco
The HempWood floor panels are an eco-friendly flooring option for those who are renovating their home and looking for a more sustainable alternative to hardwood. The flooring is achieved with hemp stalks that have been compressed and sealed with an adhesive that's soy-based in order to eliminate the need for chemical-based alternatives. The product is focused on copying the hardness, stability and density of oak, and is reported to have a 20% higher density when compared to traditional wood.
The HempWood floor panels has been created by Kentucky-based Fibonacci Inc., which has entered into a partnership with the Reel Lumber Service out of Southern California.
Danny Clark of Reel Lumber explained the product saying that, "Unlike hardwood trees, that take 30 years to grow, hemp only takes five months. Essentially the hemp is grown and harvested, turned into bushels and then soaked in protein based glue and then placed in a large press and heated to the proper temperature. The customer is left with a lumber board that may be used for any interior purpose."
