SMStudio Designs the Hastings-Sunrise Project in Vancouver
Amy Duong — September 29, 2023 — Art & Design
Canadian design firm SMStudio created the Hastings-Sunrise studio, which is a residential neighborhood located in East Vancouver. It is defined by gridded fiber-cement cladding and a swimming pool with underwater windows to see through for a unique and dynamic look. The home takes over what was once a bungalow first constructed in the 50s.
The team states, "This house was designed for a small family that loved their neighborhood but needed a more functional house and floor plan that would suit their lifestyle and needs. Originally this was a challenge, but it provided an opportunity to explore how we could utilize a standard, lower-cost building material in an interesting way. The result is a bold, playful facade that plays with light and shadow, creating interest and intrigue."
