The H2 Barge 2 project has been announced by Future Proof Shipping that will see the namesake cargo ship transformed from diesel-burning into an emissions-free vessel. The retrofit project will see the internal combustion engine swapped out for electric motors, a fuel cell system, batteries and hydrogen tanks . This will transform the vessel into an efficient powerhouse that includes six 200kW fuel cells capable of producing 1.2MW of power to easily power the motors.
Executive Director ad interim of Clean Hydrogen Partnership Mirela Atanasiu spoke on the H2 Barge 2 project saying, "Inland waterways are important for freight transport in Europe, we are thrilled to see a high-power container vessel being converted to zero-emission. The H2 Barge 2 will bring knowledge on how to retrofit vessels from diesel combustion to zero-emission alternatives, by using batteries in combination with green hydrogen in a fuel cell."
