The future of work—both in the digital age and now, in the post-pandemic era—has been a huge topic of discussion for entrepreneurs and innovators. Many architects and designers have embarked on various projects to probe what they can contribute to creating more seamless, efficient, and productive environments for the future of work. One emerging designer is Kirsty Patterson, an industrial design student at Brunel University. Their work debuted in one of Dezeen's school shows.
'3rd mode' is a device that is catered toward collaborative working environments. Arguing that wearing headphones out of necessity in busy office environments can create a "fourth wall" between a worker and their colleagues, Patterson created a simple slot mechanism that can be attached to one's headphones. Workers can toggle between open and closed statuses for communication.
