The Femme Animal and Couple Poil are just a couple of the hair-made art pieces by Fred Laforge's latest collection of sculptures. All the art pieces are created using synthetic hair, resin and nylon. Laforge's artistic objective is to focus on the concept of the atypical body. His interests and fascinations are formed from non-standard morphologies; he doesn't focus on the value of beauty that is celebrated in Western culture. Laforge uses his art to represent the aesthetic qualities and beauties of the old, disabled, obese and others. His goal is to get rid of the idea that perpetuates the competition between beauty and ugliness.
Fred Laforge's beastly beauties are, in fact, dealing with these terms of interacting between the expectations of beauty in modern society. The atypical body and structure that he erects is consequently presented as rebelling against this ideal beauty. Laforge works to, in his own words, "redeem the ugly."
