'FoPo' is a Kickstarter-funded project that makes edible food powders out of expired fruits and vegetables. The project aims to not only reduce food waste, but to also help combat global hunger.
The project operates based on the donation of cheap fruits and vegetables that would otherwise be thrown out by supermarkets and local vendors. To make the food powders, the company first dries out the fruits and vegetables to prevent the growth of bacteria. The dried product is then pulverized in order to turn it into a powder. This ingenious system helps to extend the shelf life of food products by up to two years without compromising the nutritional content. The customers can then use the powders in soups, smoothies or baking.
The goal of the project is to provide FoPo as a supplement to other food relief packages. In fact, the company has already seen success in implementing their model in the Philippines.
