The New Plans for Florence Airport Integrate Rooftop Greenery
Laura McQuarrie — January 25, 2024 — Art & Design
The expansive rooftop of a large airport terminal has the potential to be an ideal canvas for purposeful greenery, and Rafael Viñoly Architects has plans to top an international terminal at Italy's Florence Airport in Italy with a 7.7-hectare vineyard.
This visually appealing and environmentally friendly design atop the airport is set to be sloping, lined with skylights and 38 rows of usable vineyards. This design offers a nod to the renown of Italy's wine country, and according to the United States architecture studio, "A leading vintner from the region will cultivate the vineyards, and the wine will be crafted and aged in specialized cellars beneath the terminal's roof."
Within the international Florence Airport terminal, there will be a spacious yet welcoming, piazza-like space with access to retail spaces, parking and transport.
