London Mayor Boris Johnson has announced that the Carillion Igloo Genesis development consortium will be granted the opportunity to design and construct the UK's first floating village, located at the Royal Victoria Dock in East London.
The floating village is part of a larger plan to transform East London's historic docks into a large, upmarket business district. The village will span an area covering 15 acres and will include homes, restaurants, cafes, bars and an ice rink.
Carillion Igloo Genesis is likely to use the same building technology being used in the Netherlands, where floating villages and structures are far more common. The approach involves anchoring architectural structures in place using concrete piles and connecting the structures to the dock via a bridge.
It is hoped that the floating village will become one of London's most desirable areas.
