Chinese tech giant Huawei has collaborated with the Berlevag Hunter and Fisherman's Association in Norway to install an innovative fish gate that is designed to draw on the power of AI to distinguish between Atlantic and Pacific salmon.
The mechanical gate is situated in a channel of the Storelva River and makes use of underwater cameras that are said to be able to accurately identify the difference between Atlantic and Pacific salmon with 91 percent accuracy. The system is designed to activate an opening of the gate when a native Atlantic salmon is spotted so that the fish can swim up the river. However, Pacific salmon, which are an invasive species, are not allowed in.
This high-tech fish gate is a fine example of how the wonders of futuristic AI can be leveraged for conservation goals.
