Soundsuits are so named because of the noises their embellishments make when worn. Nick Cave’s background is in fiber, textiles and modern dance. He’s the creator of ‘soundsuits,’ a type of moving sculptural garment designed for use in dance and performance art.
These fabulous garments are largely made of found and throw-away objects skillfully assembled into a wearable costume. They are lavish, strange, fabulously-crafted outfits that draw from ceremonial dress, fabulous beauty-queen gowns, clergy vestments, film alien costumes, and carnival personas.
Cave’s current show, ‘Recent Soundsuits,’ is at the Jack Shainman Gallery. He will be showing at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco in May.
