Diageo and ecoSPIRITS have entered into a global agreement to distribute Diageo’s spirits brands using ecoSPIRITS’ circular packaging technology. This initiative involves the use of ecoTOTE containers, which are designed to be reused up to 150 times, significantly reducing waste and carbon emissions. The initial rollout includes popular brands such as Smirnoff vodka, Captain Morgan rum, and Gordon’s gin, which will be available in participating bars, restaurants, and hotels. The ecoTOTE containers function similarly to kegs, being collected, cleaned, refilled, and redistributed, thereby eliminating the need for single-use glass bottles.
Regarding pricing and availability, the distribution of these refillable containers is set to expand to 18 markets over the next three years. The exact pricing details have not been disclosed, but the initiative is part of Diageo’s broader sustainability goals under its Society 2030: Spirit of Progress plan, which aims to halve carbon emissions across its supply chain by 2030 and achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. The ecoTOTE system is expected to be more cost-effective in the long run due to reduced packaging and transportation costs.
