Based in Berlin, Germany, startup Ubitricity is retrofitting lamp posts into electric car charging stations. Their mobile devices allow electric vehicle drivers to plug in their cars when needed. This replaces similar but costly car charging stations.
Rather than creating additional charging stations at a high cost, Ubitricity estimates 2% of Germany's existing lamp posts could accommodate their system, while also still providing light to the area. Their more cost-effective solution is the result of a collaboration with American manufacturer Tyco French utility provider EDF and German provider Grundgun. Specifically, they are working on 100 light installations in Berlin and another 60 near Lake Constance. This will offer savings not just to the providing companies but to consumers as well without a huge upheaval of the existing infrastructure.
