Brooklyn-based design studio O'Neill McVoy Architects turns a historic powerhouse into the Bronx Children's Museum on the second floor of the building. It can be found along the Harlem Riber and Mill Pond Park, taking over the historic Bronx Terminal Market Powerhouse that was originally built in 1925 and decommissioned in 2004 before being restored in 2009.
The studio explains, "the design's flow creates a new kind of space, unlike the city's cellular rooms and street grids, that connects Bronx kids to the experience of the natural landscape and the waterfront." It is inspired by a drawing from the book Child's Conception of Space by Jean Piaget. VIsitors are invited to explore the area through the ramps and the exhibition is separated by varying heights and curved wooden and clear acrylic partition walls.
