Now that it's just about prime sailing season and many people will want to spend time on the open water, the United States Coast Guard launched a free boating safety app.
The free mobile app serves several purposes, but its primary purposes have to do with public safety and reporting damage to property and the environment. As well as being able to reach out for help on-demand in the event of an emergency, the app also allows its users to take more proactive safety measures, such as scheduling free vessel safety checks, creating float plans to share with family and friends, locating weather information from NOAA buoys and reporting hazards in the water.
Although the use of a VHF radio on board a vessel is still imperative, this app makes it a lot easier to communicate with the Coast Guard using modern means of communication.
