A team of engineers and innovators over at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) have created a unique transforming robot that is designed to be able to move in a variety of manners including but not limited to moving on land using wheels and utilizing rotors in order to fly as a drone.
Dubbed the 'Multi-Modal Mobility Morphobot' or 'M4' for short, the robot's wheeled mode allows for smooth driving operations, although it can also move in a crouching motion and display an alternating rotation movement that is somewhat akin to walking. The robot can also stand up right on two wheels in order to scope out the environment, and can both roll on two wheels or move forward on a somersault-type motion.
According to Caltech experts, in addition to representing a laudable technological breakthrough in its own right, this transforming robot could importantly offer a wide array of important applications. For example, it could potentially be used to explore hard-to-reach areas or assist with transportation of people in distress.
