Big Hug Hospitality, a Toronto-based restaurant company that owns Sunny Chinese and Mimi Chinese, has doubled down on staff support by rolling out a comprehensive health and dental benefits plan for its full-time employees, which includes any staff member who works over 35 hours per week.
In addition to healthcare benefits, the owner of Sunny Chinese and Mimi Chinese, David Schwartz, has prioritized adequate pay. According to him, this is both out of respect for his workers and a strategic move to bolster employee retention.
“We have incredible staff retention, and we continually have team members bringing in friends and people they know who want to come work with us. I think more than anything, it has to do with the overall culture that we’ve built in our space, and offering benefits is a part of that,” said David Schwartz in a recent interview with the Toronto Star.
