Researchers at Indiana State University have developed an algorithm that can accurately predict the success of aspiring models.
Fashion modeling is a notoriously difficult industry to break into. Success depends mainly on the gut instinct and attention of top people at top labels. The algorithm takes into account the statistics that these deciding voices tend to favor -- mainly physical characteristics of the aspiring models, as well as which agency represents them. However, an extra layer was added to the algorithm: the Instagram success of the aspiring models in question. The researchers found that the number of comments on the aspiring models' Instagram photos corresponded to a higher rate of success, while a high number of likes was actually a predictor of lower success.
The algorithm was able to identify six out of the eight models who were cast in this year's New York Fashion Week -- proving that beauty is more objective than we are led to believe.
