Shadows are dramatic and mysterious. They are created where light is obscured and add a powerful dimension to photographs, as seen in the fashion editorials in this cluster. The effect is even more striking when the images are in black and white.
The fronting image in this collection is mainly colourless, save for the shocking splash of the model’s fiery hot orange lips. Shadows can also act as a bit of a tease, hiding body parts and creating a secretive feeling.
Many examples of shadow play are found in street art. Objects not visible during the day suddenly become evident at night when raised surfaces cast silhouettes against buildings or on sidewalks.
The omission of light is as creative as the use of illumination.
