Zoetropes were originally invented as pre-film animation devices that create the illusion of motion when rotated. With 3D printing technology media artist Akinori Goto has transformed this tool into a modern piece of art.
When it is lit from the side, the 3D-printed zoetrope spins to reveal a figure that's dancing. As well as creating an extremely fluid animation, the modernized zoetrope takes on a completely new form, which was previously restricted to a circular drum shape with still silhouettes on the interior and slits on the side for viewing.
Goto's artful piece was recently showcased at the Spiral Independent Creators Festival and recognized as a Runner-up Grand Prix and a recipient of the Audience Award.
