'Yu Hotel', a newly built luxury hotel beside Shanghai's Yu Garden, was originally a less opulent accommodation in the form of a humble hostel, and though the current iteration is certainly more glamorous, it nonetheless pays tribute to its origins. The hotel keeps some of the original brick walls that made up the hostel and neighboring gambling hall, but it also rethinks some of the design decisions to better fit its current purpose.
One of the biggest issues with the historical building is that it had inadequate access to light. The hostel was split into four areas, none of which offered much by way of natural light. In order to fix that dark issue, the Yu Hotel is designed with several glass facades, including a large cube on the front face.
