Times Square has undergone immense changes over the course of its history in the center of Manhattan, but it hasn't ever contained something like architect J. Mayer H.'s 'XXX Times Square with Love' installation. The art piece is a series of three X-shaped lounge chair units that mark the middle of the plaza with a bright pink triple x when seen from above.
According to J. Mayer H., XXX Times Square with Love is ostensibly inspired by the shape of the intersection between Broadway and 7th Avenue. However, the exhibit's name is also a reference to the history of Times Square. Up until the 90s, Times Square was a seedy area full of bars, brothels, and peep shows. Though today the tourist area is all about consumerism and advertising, XXX Times Square with Love references its naughty history.
