Fluid Cultural Buildings

Wutopia Lab Draws Inspiration from Chinese Ink Drawings for This Project

Wutopia Lab is a studio based out of Shanghai and recently, it completed a beautiful project for Sino-Ocean Group, a Beijing-based property investment and development firm. The official name of the structure is the Monologue Art Museum and the space is multi-functional. There are "various programmatic spaces" and the floor plan measures at 1,300 square meters. From an art gallery to a dance studio, the building allows "different people to be n different spaces at the same time, but one can be alone in an artistic way," according to Yu Ting, head architect at Wutopia Lab during this project.

The studio drew inspiration from the fluidity and serenity inherent in traditional Chinese ink paintings. The building, with all its soft forms, is designed to be "a quiet island within the bustling residential district."
