Travis Dewitz Captures Wisconsin's Hunters in His New Book

For his new book, titled 'Blaze Orange,' photographer Travis Dewitz explores the unique culture of Wisconsin's hunters. For nine days in November, thousands of hunters comb the local woods in search of whitetail deer.

Though the actual season is brief, the preparation is lengthy and extensive, with hunters prepping for weeks in advance. A former hunter himself, Dewitz was interested in recapturing the nostalgia he associated with the people, not the actual process of hunting.

The photographs capture a lot of the work surrounding hunting: gun shops, taxidermists, meat markets, and of course, the local pub, where the hunters can often be found enjoying a beer. By capturing the culture, Dewitz hopes to disrupt the stereotypical impressions of what hunters are like. Those who hunt are not senselessly slaughtering animals; they are doing it for a love of the sport, an appreciation of tradition and the necessity of feeding their families.
