International architecture firm Büro Ole Scheeren is set to design a stunning new supertall skyscraper in the Chinese city of Nanjing, making use of an innovative architectural vision that revolves around the deployment of a unique octagonal shape to reduce wind loads.
The 'Nanjing Nexus' complex will be 350m tall, but while its height is stunning enough, where this building will truly catch the eye is through its odd octagonal shape, which will be interspersed with a glazed facade and lush nooks of greenery.
This unique external structure and texture is designed to mitigate wind loads on the building, although it also serves to project a novel aesthetic.
"The architectural form of Nanjing Nexus departs from the typical rectangular tower by trimming its shaft into an octagon and carving each facet into a concave bay, harnessing the energy of the context, and embracing the surrounding city," Büro Ole Scheeren stated in a press release.
Wind-Thwarting Supertall Skyscrapers
This Building Uses An Octagonal Shape to Curb Wind Loads
Trend Themes
1. Octagonal Skyscraper Shapes - Architects and engineers may explore the use of non-traditional shapes in designing skyscrapers to mitigate wind loads and explore novel aesthetics.
2. Greenery-infused Skyscrapers - Designers may look to incorporate greenery into the facades of skyscrapers, enhancing the aesthetics of the buildings and contributing to local environment sustainability.
3. Context-inspired Skyscraper Designs - Future skyscrapers could derive inspiration from the surrounding city and context, creating unique and energy-efficient buildings that stand out from the typical rectangular tower designs.
Industry Implications
1. Architecture - Architects and designers have an opportunity to experiment with new shapes and incorporate sustainable features to create buildings that are functional, energy-efficient, and visually striking.
2. Engineering - Engineers may develop new methods of mitigating wind loads on tall buildings, allowing architects to more freely explore non-traditional shapes in skyscraper design.
3. Urban Planning - City planners have an opportunity to embrace and encourage the development of innovative skyscraper designs that both respect and enhance the surrounding urban context.
