Founded by former Edinburgh University student Douglas Martin, MiAlgae is a unique food company that makes fish food from whiskey waste. Founded in 2016, the company was developed on the idea of producing an "economically and environmentally-friendly fish feed to support Scottish fish farms." Current fish food pellets are comprised of fishmeal, fish oil, grains, soy and vitamins. The MiAlge formula does not stray too far from this formula but it does manage to replace the fishmeal and fish oil with microalgae collected from the by-products of whiskey waste.
MiAlgae has recently received a £500,000 investment from Equity Gap, the Scottish Investment Bank and Old College Capita. This funding will aid MiAlge in growing immensely and will allow them to test their technology and fish food on a wider scale.
