Mexican architect Tatiana Bilbao designed the 'Casa Ajijic,' a weekend house built on the shore of Lake Chapala, Jalisco.
Despite her modest budget, Bilbao attempted to construct a house of ambitious size that optimized for the surrounding lake views.
The home is constructed from rammed earth walls, a material that was chosen because it doesn't require extra finish or insulation. The material also influenced the home's shape and proportions. In specific, a geometric form would greatly enhance the structural strength of the walls, so Bilbao designed the floor plan as a series of interconnected squares.
The bedrooms and bathrooms reside in a cube located at one end of the building. Meanwhile, the three other volumes are layered to ensure an open-plan living and dining area and access to two terraces.
