EOOS and Laufen Produce a Urine-Trapping Toilet as a Wastewater Solution

A new wastewater solution has been proposed by Austrian design firm EOOS and toiler brand Laufen. The two brands worked closely with the Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology (EAWAG), as well.

The product is dubbed 'Save!' and it boasts a separation-forward design. It attempts to address the "environmental issue of pollution caused by wastewater." It essentially traps urine -- which is rich in nitrogen, potassium, and phosphorous, and repurposes it as fertilizer. This is done through an intuitive design developed by EOOS. The toilet boasts an "internal curved section." The liquid that the wastewater solution has gathered will be later treated to remove all micro-pollutants and residues. In the end, EOOS and Laufen's toilet will produce a fertilizer called Aurin. This has been approved for "usage on all plants" by the Swiss Federal Office of Agriculture.
