Architect and artist Asif Khan created a new Vantablack-covered building for the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics in South Korea. The temporary structure reaches 10 meters high and was spray-painted in Vantablack VBx2—a substance that can absorb over 99% of light. With small lights installed over the exterior, the designer wanted to create a building that looked like a window into space. The paint is so black that it is almost impossible for humans to perceive the shape of whatever object it coats.
Through the dark corridor, the interior will include a bright white contrasting space that has a multi-sensory hydrophobic water installation with sensors that cause water droplets to fall and pool into a lake. Opening on February 9, the new Vantablack-covered building will be available for visitors to enter and explore.
