Union Terrace Gardens, a historic park in Aberdeen, Scotland, is set to undergo a face lift. While some might be concerned by the prospect of redeveloping a landmark public space, the rationale is a good one. The new Union Terrace Gardens design will make the park entirely accessible, allowing more residents of and visitors to Aberdeen to experience the beauty of its green space.
Though the park redesign isn't expected to be finished until 2019, the renderings and design concepts have received excellent feedback from a survey of residents. In particular, there was a nearly unanimously positive response to the park's accessibility. The design includes an accessible walkway route into the gardens from the adjacent Union Street, an elevator to the lower levels of the park, and an incorporation of accessible ramps into the grand staircase at the center of the park.
